RMIT Capitol Theatre

Opened in 1924, the Capitol Theatre was designed by the famed American husband-and-wife architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. It was Victoria’s first grand “picture palace”, showcasing a dazzling Chicago‑Gothic style interior—especially its sculptural, crystalline plaster ceiling illuminated by thousands of coloured lamps—elevating it as one of the Griffins’ most significant interior works

We were proud to play a role in the restoration of one of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks. Our team carefully revived the heritage plasterwork, bringing new life to the intricate details of its extraordinary interior. This work celebrated the craftsmanship of the past while ensuring the theatre’s beauty endures for future generations.

In 2019, this project was recognised with both the AWCI State (VIC) Award of Excellence and the AWCI National Award of Excellence, reflecting the high standard of workmanship and attention to detail we achieved throughout.
