The Palais Theatre - Internal Work

The Palais Theatre began as the Palais de Danse in 1913, a dance hall opened by three American brothers. It later evolved into a cinema, and in 1922, the Phillips brothers commissioned Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin to redesign it as Palais Pictures.

Construction started in 1925, but a fire in early 1926 destroyed the stage area just before completion. Theatre architect Henry Eli White took over the project, and under his direction, the new theatre was completed.

The Palais officially reopened on 11 November 1927, boasting one of the largest and most opulent auditoriums in Australia, seating nearly 3,000 patrons.

The Palais Theatre - INTERNAL
2017, we had the privilege of restoring both the interior plasterwork and the exterior façade of the Palais Theatre. This beloved live performance venue required a delicate balance of precision and care, from the ornate interiors to the sweeping presence of its façade. Our work helped return the theatre to its former glory, preserving its timeless character as one of Melbourne’s great cultural landmarks.

This project was recognised in 2017 with the AWCI State (VIC) Award of Excellence and the AWCI National Award of Excellence, acknowledging the exceptional execution and craftsmanship our team produced.
